My history cartagena
Cartagena de Indias is a city that from its beginnings to today has greatly influenced the events in Colombia. In pre-Columbian times they inhabited their Indian warriors Caribbean coast race that would give problems to more than one colonizing expedition that dared to disembark in its beaches.

He then had the honor of founding the Madrid Don Pedro de Heredia, on June 1, 1533, under the name of "Cartagena de Poniente" to distinguish it from "Cartagena de Levante" in Spain, both with similar bays.

The rising population would be targeted by the greed of British and French invaders, and their quality of slave trading port and made it very attractive to foreign eyes. Therefore their protection and defense were more urgent, beginning in the sixteenth century Fort Boqueron (where today is the Strongest Pastelillo). Then came gradually, different fortifications that surround the city according to the demands and the evolution of military art in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. However, it not for this city is saved from devastating invasions like that of Baron de Pointis in 1697, which left her ruined.

In 1610 the first friars arrive Sentencing Court of the Holy Office of the Inquisition, which would extend its power of reproof and surveillance until the time of Independence.

Cartagena de Indias was sometimes seat of viceroys, Don Sebastián de Eslava, who ruled for almost ten years in a row, replacing Santa Fe as the capital of the New Kingdom of Granada.

On 11 November 1811 the Act of Absolute Independence of Spain, starting with this 10 long years to achieve final emancipation would be signed. Of the many blockades and sieges that suffered the Villa de Heredia, include the tax by Pablo Morillo, The Peacemaker, in 1815, who had the aim of recovering this important plaza for the Spanish Crown. "Cartagena de Indias, Heroic City" was the title that after enduring more than three months of intense siege win.

In the Republican period the city would enter a long period of stagnation, resulting from its loss of strategic and commercial interests. You can quote Rafael Nunez, Cartagena he was elected President of the Republic on four occasions during this time of "recession" of Cartagena de Indias, directing the destinies of the Nation from the Eroica, as in Cologne some viceroys did.

The rebirth of Cartagena de Indias as a determinant city in Colombia is given into the twentieth century with the revival of its economy, when its history and legends are just memories of the glorious past of a tourist city that receives the XXI century full of hopes and dreams for the future.
